Volunteering is a thoughtful act by giving back to the community. People volunteer all the time, as greeters at the hospital or serving soup at a kitchen: no fuss, very little risk. A Search and Rescue volunteer is a whole other experience, and not for the faint of heart (or a weak heart).
You have to want to be a SAR volunteer, plain and simple. It's a time commitment no matter how you slice it: training, missions and meetings are always happening. There is always something to learn, re-learn or test out on the mountain.
Safety is always the number one focus. It's a good thing too since almost all of the "search and rescue" takes place outside, doing risky things like hiking in the dark, diving in a frigid river or hanging off a cliff. The mitigated risk of search and rescue may not appeal to some...but appeals to others.
On the other rock, you might like SAR if any of the following describes you:
1. If like challenging yourself while helping others
2. You're willing commit time to training and meetings because you want to learn
3. You want to use tools (toys) that you normally wouldn't get a chance with in every day life
4. Meeting people and working in teams to accomplish a goal is satisfying
5. Able to work hard without expecting payment or payback. You pay it forward.
The best way to get introduced to SAR is by calling your local organization and asking for a tour. Meet with the director to get a sense of culture and the types of specialty teams that match existing hobbies like mountain biking or horseback riding.
